im planning to get this guitar. with it, I shall be a shredder for Christ. and play some country music on an 8 string 'cause that is the joke. playing happy music on an 8 string. on a 6 string i notice i play allot of sad sounding music that is almost bluesy. but when I play an 8 string i play more happy. idk why.

When I put .007 A4 25.5” into a string tension calculator it warns me the string will likely break… any thoughts on this?

Dado nakon 5 god kaj sam isprobaval svirat na 7 i 8 žica gitarama s duplim (27''/25.5'') i normalnu s (26.5'') ljestvicama ovaj štim ima puno više smisla ali kaj se tiče tih 007 žica koje sam nabail od (daddaria s britanske stranice strings direct) trebam gitaru koja ima puno manju ljestvicu od 24.5 za tah A4. Htel bi probat 9-žičanu s tim štimom i dropom na dnu...možda jednog dana..ugl hvala na ovom videu jer mi je super došel! Pozdrav s Zagorja!

You inspired me to get an 8 string. Was thinking about a 7 so I could make the most of the Commander in Chief's online guitar course, and saw those Harley Bentons, 5 USD for an 8 string. Listened and didnt like the low thud, but then I saw this video... Ended up getting the roasted 8 string, just picked it up today. In the mean time Ill play with the low thud for a bit. Its not as bad as I thought, Ill play around while I wait for the 7s I ordered from Ebay. Also, became a fan of your music. Killer stuff, doing my best to spread the word.

Waiting for the Harley Benton roasted to clear customs. Noticed that it has the same neck dimensions so ... odds are that means it's very much high A compatible :) Will see if I can add a fret ... though I'm only planning on bending the b or lower strings and I'm not too sure of finding a capo that could beef it up to standard tuning. Edit: It finally arrived, about halfway between G# and A... Slow but steady wins the race. Very nice feel and amazing paint when up close (I actually ordered it because of its neck and thought the color was ugly, but man once it arrived I fell in love with it's metal green). Also opting for a low A, there seems to be a lot of Jazz literature to help out. Once it's finished stabilizing, I'll be doing the saddle adjustments and then see if it needs a truss rod adjustment as well. Ordered some Ernie ball 7 string slinky Cobalt (which have a gage similar to the one described on the 8 string video) and a bunch of D'addario 7s (they come in separate plastic bags so they'll be fresh). I did try it when I was at G, and man it sounded really nice. Can't wait for A Researching how to add those additional frets... I think this is a very advanced instrument really. So many possibilities. What a great adventure.

This was super inspiring ... it helped me make up my mind, bought the roasted by Harley Benton and 5 sets of 7s; will buy the standard strings later. Shipping may take some time, but hey my joints are saying that I should focus on theory so I'm more than glad to take my time with that heh Dunno if you're planning on making a 3rd episode; it would be interesting to lay out any orchestration techniques, or a more technical string muting, and multiple picking approaches (hybrid, tapping, finger-style). Would also be interesting to bring the 9 stringer into this discussion. And a sort of recap, about the role these different string guitars could have when layering them if it applies. Also how do you interact with the bassist, keyboards, or in other settings. Do you give your strings any maintenance? How long do they usually last? Any ergonomic specific ideas? Muting techniques, can the thumb be used for specific chord voicing? Do whammy bars/bending make any sense? Fanned frets and the reduction of tension on the A string...Amp considerations, dialing in tone & gating? Pickup considerations (it would be amazing to have a warm jazzy neck and face melting metal bridge but which actually tend to blend together?) Oh my ... Going nuts I think. Can't wait until the guitar arrives, in the mean time I'll be a good boy and let my hands heal because I want to do a lot of things. Anyway I think this series could actually turn into a course on extended guitars, composition/arrangement, gear, etc. Any references to lutes, Russian 7 stringers, and those 10 string classical guitars would be a huge plus (and may expand on those Jazz 7 strings, I mean Peace Sells would not be the same without Chris Polands amazing fusion fills). Also ... we going from A1 to A6, I mean this is a huge beast, but what are some of the restrictions and tradeoffs for this? What about solo music writing in the vein of a classical guitar or piano piece? I better stop writing I have a bill paying job and I'm here writing the index to a thesis or maybe a treaties; anyway fascinated by your playing, your awesome compositions and this unconventional approach to the 8 string. To me it changes from a novelty to an instrument that really stands on its own and well... I actually ordered, it's just a very rich and open tone palate. I'll recap by saying you could sell courses, books and whatnot. Edit: My Harely Benton Roasted 8 string guitar is here and in tune - Used some Ernie ball Cobalt Slinky 7s and Daddario 0.007s (Bond music in the background); it sounds like a harp, close to the incredible subtlety of an open G or D (save this sounds richer), this is quickly turning into my favorite guitar. I still need to do some fine tuning before I add extra frets (pickup height and whatnot). I have been looking for some info on this tuning, but it seems were out on the weeds here. For now, I plan on falling back into Jazz stuff I found. Ron Jackson (a 7 string player who uses drop A) suggested a book by Van Eps - "Harmonic Mechanisms for Guitar" which I plan to track down and learn from. And then there's the GTDB site offering some customizable charts, as well as some Rusty Cooley snippets here and there (though they seem to focus on low B). All in all,it seems that for the most part high / low A string tuning is quite lacking as far as documentation goes. Daddo's guide on his first part seems like a great starting point, because of the way he describes it (though he was using low B, which makes for very different chord voicings). Anyway, will update this comment if I make further progress but that should help fellow tone prospectors out there. Oh before I forget, it seems the truss rod will not need any adjustments; some of the original strings were very light so the overall string tension seems more or less similar to the current setup. And for reference it's a 25.5 - 27 multi-scale neck (just like the Ibanez mentioned in another video). And the one complaint they had about these pickups was in the really low string which we no longer have, so they're perfect right out of the gate.
